The DC Metro Neighborhood Guide — Where to Buy in MD, DC, and Northern Virginia

Honest, lived-in neighborhood guides for the entire DC metro — Montgomery County, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia. Where to buy, what it costs, who it's for.

The DC metro is huge — and "the best neighborhood" depends entirely on what you optimize for. Schools? Walkability? Commute? Value per square foot? A 30-year-old townhouse you can renovate? A new build with no yard work?

This guide pulls together every neighborhood writeup on the site. Start with one of the broad "best places" overviews to orient yourself, then drill into the specific town or comparison you care about.

How to read this guide

The first cluster of links is high-level — best neighborhoods for families, young professionals, commuters, etc. These are the right starting points if you're new to the area or unsure where to focus.

The middle cluster is deep dives into specific towns — Bethesda, Potomac, Rockville, Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Wheaton, and on. If you already have a shortlist, head there.

After Maryland comes Washington, DC — Columbia Heights, Petworth, Capitol Hill — for buyers who want walkable urban living without crossing state lines for groceries.

Then Northern Virginia — Arlington, Alexandria, Vienna, Falls Church — for buyers weighing the Virginia tax structure and the proximity to the Pentagon, Reagan National, and the Orange/Silver lines.

The last cluster is comparisons — Bethesda vs Chevy Chase vs Potomac, Montgomery County vs Fairfax County, Maryland vs Virginia vs DC. These resolve the question most people are really asking: "Given these two options, which one wins for my situation?"

A note on what "best" means

Every "best of" list is opinionated. Mine are based on closed deals — what my actual clients liked, what surprised them, what they regretted. Take any single ranking with a grain of salt, but when 6 different posts independently flag the same neighborhood as a fit for your profile, that's signal.
